Searching For Creativity

My friend Morgan was kind enough to post her recipe for Bath Crayons on a previous post. So, instead of retrying my recipe (which I’ll post below), I used her recipe. I didn’t have much luck with it either to be honest.  Did yours work Mo?

Here they are mid-stir.  I got impatient and didn’t quite let them harden as much as I should’ve.  I must have stirred the dumb things for 10 minutes! I figured they’d dry out on their own.  Nah.  2 days later, and they are still soft.  I recommend that if you dye them as dark as I did mine: don’t add as much water as the recipe calls for.  My original recipe only called for 2 Tablespoons for a little less soap.

They turned out pretty, but one was actually supposed to be blue-green instead of double the blue. Oh well.  I let B use the one that’s just rolled up into a big crayon in the bathtub.  Despite all the food coloring I used it did not work very well.

Here is the next project we did from the same page as the original recipe.  I’m going to have to get Morgan’s recipe for this too, because it didn’t turn out as well as hers seemed to on her blog.  Here’s where I got my info:

A page I ripped out of a magazine probably 2 years ago trying to plan ahead for B. I randomly found it a few days ago while looking for a recipe in my unorganized binder.

Soap Crayons:

1 cup unscented soap flakes or a bar of soap, grated

2 Tbs hot water

Liquid food coloring

1. Mix soap and hot water in a plastic bowl, then divide into small bowls, one for each color.  Add 12 drops (at least) of liquid food coloring to each bowl. 2. Stir mixture until it thickens and becomes hard to stir.  Scoop up by the tablespoonful and roll into thick log shapes.  Let dry 1 to 2 days.

Finger Paints

2 cups cold water

3 tsp sugar

1/2 cup cornstarch

Liquid food coloring

Small bowls or jars with lids

1. In a small pot, stir water, sugar, and cornstarch.  Whisk over low heat for 5 minutes until mixture is thick and clear.  2. Stir in corn syrup.  Pour paint into small containers with lids.  3. Add a few drops of food coloring to each and shake until color is well mixed.  (I had to stir mine– too thick for shaking).
